My dear Mayhew

I have your letter of January 6th and Strickland's

enclosure.

I think the latter constitutes a serious criticism of the University, and I believe modification of their courses and the injection of a greater practical element into them might induce a change of view on the part of the young Chinaman. But I have expressed my views, for what they are worth, on that place before. If the Committee could be induced to refer the matter to a Sub-Committee composed, say, of McLean, Schofield, the Principal of Loughborough, introduced as an extra member, and myself, to draw up a note, something might happen, but I rather

think the place wants an application of dynamite.
